Kate Cornwall - Illuminating Perspectives"Glass draws you in; ensnares, nurtures, challenges, surprises, and confounds you, all at the same time. The vibrancy and translation of light, the variety and complexity of processes used to create glass art means you’re always learning.”Evolving from a passionate hobbyist to a distinguished exhibiting artist, Kate Cornwall possesses a profound understanding of the materiality of glass. Her journey spans various disciplines, from kiln-formed glass to cast glass and flame-working, with a recent foray into mixed media. In her artistic exploration, Kate embraces sustainability by repurposing materials such as pewter, barbed wire, and reclaimed metals like aluminum and copper, transforming them into components for her mixed-media glass sculptures. This innovative approach not only showcases her technical prowess but also reflects a commitment to recycling and reimagining the potential of discarded elements.By juxtaposing the fragile nature of glass with its robust strength and sharp, hard, potentially dangerous angles, Kate Cornwall uses the medium as a canvas for expression, pushing the boundaries of traditional craft glass art.Kate has been a driving force behind the nationally successful Glass Art In NZ initiative, where her goals extend beyond artistic expression to providing community, fostering conversations, and increasing public awareness of glass within the New Zealand landscape. After a successful career in business, with corporate change and project management qualifications, Kate has studied under many of NZ’s world class glass artists, including David Traub, Evelyn Dunstan, Elizabeth McClure, as well as several international visiting artists including Daniel Clayman, Silvia Levenston, Kirsty Rae.Originally from Ōtautahi Christchurch, Kate has found her artistic home in Ohakune, nestled beneath her adopted maunga, Mt Ruapehu. Kate exhibits across New Zealand, and her works have found homes in private collections both nationally and internationally, including Australia, Singapore, England and America.
